WR: Golden Gophers Fall at Wisconsin, 18-17

The University of Minnesota wrestling team (9-8, 3-4) was upset at No. 14 Wisconsin, 18 -17, on Friday night in Madison, Wis. The Badgers won six of the 10 matches as they improved to 10-3-2 and 3-3-1 in the Big Ten. The Golden Gophers will look to rebound on Sunday at the Sports Pavilion against fourth-ranked Illinois at 2 p.m.

Minnesota got off to a strong start as seventh-ranked Bobbe Lowe gave the team a 5-0 lead with a 20-5 technical fall against Collin Cudd at 125 pounds. Three takedowns and a near fall in the first period gave Lowe a 9-2 first-period lead. Lowe added another near fall in the second as he improved to 29-4 overall and 11-4 in dual meets.

The Badgers got back into the match with four straight victories, including 12th-ranked Tom Clum’s upset of fourth-ranked Mack Reiter, 6-3, at 133 pounds. Clum scored two first-period takedowns to take a 4-1 lead. Reiter was not able to match Clum offensively as he dropped his second match in a row and fell to 15-2 in dual meets.

Wisconsin took its first lead of the match after Ed Gutnik claimed a 3-1 overtime decision against 20th-ranked Tommy Owen at 141 pounds. After the two traded escapes in regulation, Gutnik scored the deciding takedown with just two seconds remaining in the first overtime period.

The Badgers extended their lead to 9-5 as Chad Henning earned a 7-2 decision against Danny Williams at 149 pounds. Henning took a 3-2 lead in the second period following his reversal just five seconds after Williams scored a takedown. Henning put the match away with a takedown in the waning seconds of the match.

The wins continued for Wisconsin at 157 pounds as 12th-ranked Tyler Turner outlasted C.P. Schlatter, 10-6. Schlatter returned to the Golden Gopher lineup after missing the previous two dual meets with a skin infection. Schlatter took a 4-1 first-period lead, but Turner tied the match at six with a takedown with 12 seconds to go in the second period. Turner clinched the bout with his takedown in the first 30 seconds of the third period.

Minnesota cut the Badger lead to 12-8 as 10th-ranked Matt Nagel defeated freshman Jake Donar, 6-2, at 165 pounds. Nagel took a 4-1 lead in the second period thanks to a pair of takedowns and was awarded a bonus point for his riding time advantage of over three minutes.

The Badgers regained the momentum and increased their lead to 15-8 as Kelly Flaherty defeated Gabriel Dretsch, 11-4, at 174 pounds. Dretsch took a 2-0 first period lead, but Flaherty stormed back with a takedown and a near fall to end the period with a 6-2 lead. Dretsch cut the lead to 6-4 in the second period, but Flaherty increased his lead to 9-4 with a takedown with one second remaining in the second period.

The lead was increased to 18-8 after eighth-ranked Brady Reinke defeated No. 6 Roger Kish, 10-8, at 184 pounds. In a back-and-forth match, Reinke broke an 8-8 tie with his takedown in the final 30 seconds of the match. Kish was making his first appearance in the Golden Gopher lineup since the National Duals. He had missed the last six matches with a skin infection.

Minnesota got back on the winning track at 197 pounds, but it was too little too late. Redshirt freshman Matt Koz upset No. 20 Ryan Flaherty, 6-5. Koz trailed 5-4 with time winding down in the match, but scored the deciding takedown just before the buzzer sounded. The win cut the Badger lead to 18-11, but Wisconsin still clinched the dual meet victory.

A bit of controversy erupted at heavyweight as Wisconsin head coach Barry Davis decided not to send out Lee Kraemer to face second-ranked Cole Konrad. While it angered the Golden Gopher coaching staff, it disappointed those in attendance that traveled to Madison from Konrad’s hometown of Freedom, Wis. The forfeit gave the Badgers a one- point win, 18-17.

On Sunday, Minnesota will look to close out the Big Ten regular season with an upset of No. 4 Illinois at the Sports Pavilion. Illinois defeated Minnesota, 20-15, earlier this season at the National Duals. The Golden Gophers will also honor their three seniors: Bobbe Lowe, Jon Duncombe and Josh McLay. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
