If the five consecutive Division 1 state team championships weren’t enough evidence of Davison High’s strong wrestling program, there’s even more now.

Davison continued its stranglehold on the Michigan Wrestling Association’s Mr. Wrestler award as Jon Reader became the third Cardinal in a row to pin down the honor.

Paul Donahoe won it in 2004 and Brent Metcalf claimed it last season. Donahoe is wrestling at Nebraska and Metcalf at Virginia Tech.

The Iowa State-bound Reader, who is ranked No. 2

in the nation by Amateur Wrestling News, was 60-0 this season in winning his third consecutive individual state championship. He had 55 pins, including 53 in a row.

Reader, who carries a 3.56 grade point average, won more varsity matches than any previous Davison wrestler, finishing 231-6. He finished third in the state at 112 pounds as a freshman before winning at 135 in 2004, 152 last year and 160 this season.

He’ll wrestle for the Cael Sanderson, who recently took over for Bobby Douglas as head coach for the Cyclones. Sanderson is the 2004 Olympic Champion who went unbeaten in winning four NCAA championships.

Reader won four Genesee County titles, four Big Nine Conference titles, four district crowns and four regional championships. He won the prestigious Medina, Ohio tournament three times.

In addition to helping Davison win four team championships, Reader has won the Cadet FILA freestyle and Greco-Roman titles twice and was selected Outstanding Wrestler. He was a two-time Cadet freestyle runner-up and became a double Junior All-American in 2005 by placing third in both styles.

Corunna coach Dave Robertson was named Head Coach of the Year in Division 3.
