Vering, Lester win bronze medals at Poland Open

CHELM, Poland “Greco-Roman wrestlers Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/USOEC/Gator WC) both earned bronze medals Saturday at the Poland Open.
Vering won his first three matches, fell to Japan’s Shingo Matsumoto in the semifinals at 84 kg/185 lbs. before bouncing back to beat Hungary’s Zoltan Todor to earn a bronze medal. Matsumoto was eighth in the World in 2005 and seventh in the 2004 Olympics.
Vering downed 2003 World bronze medalist Attila Batky of Slovakia in the first round before following with wins over Opakov of Russia and Malinowski Przemyslaw of Poland to reach the semis.
Vering is a 2004 Olympian who also has made the last three U.S. World teams. He is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 185.
Lester fell to Olexandr Khvoshch of the Ukraine in the first round at 145.5 pounds before winning his next two matches over Bieloba Sergiej of the Ukraine and Sindikov of Russia to earn a bronze. Khvoshch placed fourth in the World in 2002 and was a 2004 Olympian.
Lester made his first U.S. World team last year and is ranked No. 1 in the nation at 145.5.
Americans Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Russ Davie (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) each placed fifth on Sunday in Poland.
Davie fell to Sweden’s Jalmar Sjoeberg in the match for the bronze. Sjoeberg was a Junior World Champion in 2005.
American Adam Wheeler won his first match before falling in his second match to Balasz Kiss of Hungary. Kiss was second in the 2004 World University Championships. Wheeler beat Justin Ruiz in the Dave Schultz Memorial. Ruiz won a bronze medal in the 2005 World meet.
Ruiz fell to Mirko Englich of Germany in the first round and was eliminated since Englich did not advance to the finals. Englich was fifth in the World in 2005.
