Missouri Shatters Attendance Record But Falls To OK State

Columbia, Mo. – The No. 11 Missouri Tigers shattered their previous attendance record at the Hearnes Center Jan. 22, dropping their Big 12 opener to No. 2-ranked defending national champion Oklahoma State, 29-10. Packing 2,128 fans into the bleachers, the Tigers easily broke the old mark of 1,436, set Feb. 16, 2005 against UT-Chattanooga.

Wrestling at 141 pounds, senior Chris McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) picked up the Tigers’ first victory of the day, beating Ethan Kyle by decision, 7-4. Trading points in the first four minutes, McCormick received a point after his opponent was called for stalling, then took his opponent down late in the second period to gain a 5-2 advantage. Kyle scored two points with a takedown, but a pair of escapes by McCormick enabled the senior to pick up the win.

Picking up his first two points 1:29 into the bout, No. 1 Ben Askren (junior, Hartland, Wis.) allowed Brandon Mason to escape twice, then took him down again on both occasions. Turning his third takedown into even more points, Askren recorded a two-point nearfall with one second on the clock to establish an 8-2 lead after the first three minutes. Doubling that total over the final four minutes, Askren earned his 32nd straight victory by major decision, 16-4.

Pushing the action from the opening whistle, redshirt freshman Raymond Jordan (New Bern, N.C.) completed a single-leg takedown with 20 seconds left in the opening period against Rusty Blackmon. Unable to escape Blackmon’s hold in the second, Jordan entered the final frame with a 2-0 advantage. Choosing down to start the last two minutes, Blackmon escaped quickly, but Jordan sealed the match with his second single-leg takedown to earn the decision, 4-2.

The Tigers travel to Lincoln next week to take on the No. 5 Nebraska Cornhuskers. Missouri’s next home match is scheduled for 1 p.m. CST against No. 8 Oklahoma in the Hearnes Center.
