Jeff Jacobs of Point Pleasant, N.J. was the first athlete to sign up online for the ASICS 2005 East Coast National Beach Wrestling Championships, which will be held in the city of Long Beach, N.Y., on Long Island, Saturday, August 13.

Jacobs, a two-time New Jersey state high school qualifier, was the first from any division to enter the tournament, which has an on-line registration process in place. Since Jacobs registered for the event weeks ago, many others have also signed up for the tournament.

“My father read about it on the computer,” said Jeff. “We are right at the coast. I am around the beach every day. I am always wrestling around on the beach. My dad has a sister on Long Island, so we thought we would spend a night with her and go to the tournament.”

Jacobs has been wrestling nine years, having started in elementary school, and competed through Junior and Senior High School. He is going to be a senior at Point Pleasant Borough High School in the fall.

He was a varsity wrestler in ninth grade. As a sophomore, Jacobs was second in the district and second in the region and competed in the state tournament. As a junior, he won the district and the regional titles. At the New Jersey state meet, he lost in the third round to eventual champion Scott Giffin, and was defeated in the wrestle-back. He has high goals for his senior year, looking to earn a medal at the state championships.

Jacobs placed fifth in a national folkstyle championships this spring, and has wrestled in freestyle at a few USA Wrestling New Jersey events this spring. Clearly, Jacobs is a talented and successful high school wrestler, and is looking forward to trying out the newest style of wrestling, beach wrestling.

“It sounded like fun. I feel like I have a home court advantage because I live at the beach,” he said.

Jacobs will be in good shape and ready to wrestle. He has been practicing all summer. Jacobs just attended a week of summer camp at the College of New Jersey. He attends club practices at his high school, and has entered some summer wrestling dual meets. Jacobs is also planning another wrestling camp before school starts in the fall.

“It would be nice to win. But who knows, I have never competed on the beach before. It would be nice to do well. But it sounds fun. Why not do it? It sounds cool. It will be a fun thing to be a part of it,” said Jacobs.
