Great wrestlers aren’t born, they are made through hard work, dedication, practice “and more practice.

Iron Wrestling Inc. has been formed to provide a training ground for those purposes “and to promote the sport of wrestling in Minnesota’s northern suburbs. The club, which currently has over 50 members, provides training opportunities for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade from New Brighton, Mounds View and other northern suburb cities, but is also open to kids from throughout the Twin Cities metro area who want additional training opportunities in folkstyle, freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

The club will also serve as a feeder program to local high school programs, and provide additional membership for Minnesota/USA Wrestling, the state amateur wrestling sanctioning body.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to work on wrestling techniques, strength and agility exercises, goal-setting and other self-confidence building skills,” says Kevin Roberts, head coach with the Iron Wrestling Inc. and strength and conditioning coordinator with the Minnesota Gophers wrestling team. “Kids wrestling pairs kids up by age and weights. Our club has a unique tie with some of the best wrestlers in the state, allowing us to have the best coaches in the Twin Cities.”

In addition to Roberts, Iron Wrestling Inc. features numerous accomplished coaches and instructors, including former Minnesota Gophers wrestler and current Irondale High School head coach Josh Krebs; Mounds View High School head coach Dan Engebretson; and Minnesota Gophers wrestlers Mack Reiter, C.P. Schlatter, Marc Mellmer and Tyler Safratowich.

  1. Danny Engebretson is an excellent coach, he teaches all of the wrestlers all of the proper skills and techniques to become better at what you want to achieve. His desire and inspiration for the sport of wrestling drives and motivates all of the wrestlers in the room.
