Tiger Wrestlers Drop 18-14 Dual to Oklahoma

…Cieleski, Woodley, Askren and Pell Come Through With Wins…

Norman, Okla. – Wrestling in their second dual in 24 hours, the 12th ranked MU team lost a disappointing 18-14 dual to No. 6 Oklahoma in Norman High School in Norman, Okla. The Tigers are now 13-5 on the season and 0-3 in Big 12 action, while OU improves to 13-4 and 1-2. Missouri recorded four straight wins from 157 pounds to 184 pounds, with Brad Cieleski (157) and Matt Pell (184) bookending the series with major decision victories.

After a double forfeit at 125-pounds, the Tigers suffered three straight losses at 133-, 141- and 149-pounds. Cieleski (Brookville, Pa.) recorded his second straight win over a Big 12 opponent after dropping #20 Charles Jones by a score of 10-1. Throughout the seven minutes of action, Cieleski tallied three takedowns, an escape, a two-point nearfall and 2:33 of riding time for his final nine-point lead.

Up next for the Tigers was eighth-ranked senior co-captain Tyron Woodley (Ferguson, Mo.) at 165 pounds. Currently 6-1 against league wrestlers, Woodley handed his OU opponent Randy Sulaver a 9-3 decision in the afternoon dual. Woodley led Sulaver entering both the second and third periods and allowed the Sooner only three escapes in the final four minutes of action. Today’s win by Woodley was his 30th of the season and 103 of his Tiger career.

Sophomore 2004 All-American Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) was quick to rebound from his Friday night loss to No. 1 Chris Pendleton of Oklahoma State. Ranked No. 2 in the nation, Askren paired with 10th-ranked E.K. Waldhaus in today’s dual and won the 8-4 decision through three takedowns, an escape and one penalty point for stalling awarded at the close of the first period.

Luxemburg, Wis., native Pell was the fourth and final Tiger to earn points for the team as he continued his dominance of OU wrestler Justin Dyer. Pell, No. 10 and Dyer, No. 13, met at center circle for the third time in two years, and as in the past, Pell won the match, today by a score of 12-3. Recording his 60th career win, Pell earned his 12 points through a series of three takedowns, a three-point nearfall, two escapes and 2:49 of riding time.

The Missouri wrestling team will host No. 2 Iowa State on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 1 p.m. (CT) in the Hearnes Center.
