Three Pins Key UC Davis’ 29-14 Wrestling Win Against Fresno State

Murphree, Richmond and Bear each record falls for Aggies

DAVIS, Calif. – UC Davis picked up a trio of pins on Saturday night, opening an early 21-3 lead against Fresno State, as the Aggies snapped the Bulldogs’ five-match winning streak with a 29-14 nonconference wrestling victory before 288 fans at Hickey Gym.

UC Davis, coming off a 27-13 loss at Pac-10 Conference foe Oregon State on Friday night, improved to 6-5-1 overall with the win. Fresno State dropped to 10-7-1.

Daniel Murphree at 149 pounds, Frank Richmond at 165 and Brandon Bear at 184 each posted pins for the Aggies on Saturday night while Ronnie Silva (174), Derek Moore (133) and Jeff Bristol (141) also had victories for UC Davis.

Jim Medeiros (157), Marcio Botelho (197), Clint Walbeck (285) and Christian Bowerman (125) each had wins for the Bulldogs with Botelho earning a technical fall.

Murphree opened the match with a pin at 149 for the Aggies, stopping Dan Cadwallader at 6 minutes, 47 seconds of their opening bout. Murphree led 11-1 before winning. Pins by Richmond over Shane Seibert at 165 and by Bear over Deveraux Solis at 184, helped UC Davis take a 21-3 lead over the Bulldogs at the midway point of the dual. Richmond led 5-2 before winning his bout while Bear had an 8-2 lead before earning his pin.

Silva had the Aggies’ other win in their strong first half of the dual, scoring an 8-4 decision against Chris Gifford after both wrestlers were tied 4-4 at the end of the first period. Silva, however, held Gifford without a point the rest of the way to improve his season record to 7-1.

Botelho had 13 takedowns before recording his technical fall against Reed Shelger at 197, with Botelho ending the match with 20 seconds remianing. That closed the team score to 21-8, a deficit the Bulldogs would tighten further with Walbeck’s 5-3 decision against Flynn Ficker at heavyweight.

Fresno State closed to 21-14 after Bowerman’s 6-4 decision against the Aggies’ Pancho Manriquez at 125 pounds, but Moore posted a technical fall over Sal Gonzalez at 133 and Bristol beat Garrett Spooner at 141 by a 9-3 decision to give UC Davis its final margin of victory. Moore was up 16-1 when his technical fall was recorded at the 5:25 mark.

Saturday’s match also marked the final home appearance for six Aggie seniors. Bryan Bachar, Michael Clarkston, Shelger, Bear, Silva and Ficker were honored prior to the dual.

The Aggies will now prepare for the Pac-10 Championships which begin Feb. 27 at Cal Poly.
