MU Wrestling Takes 33-6 Wins over Virginia Tech and Ohio State

…#12 Tigers Improve to 3-0 on the Season…

Dec. 18, 2004

Columbus, Ohio – Ranked 12th in the nation, the Missouri wrestling team improved to 3-0 on the season, earning wins over Virginia Tech and Ohio State by a score of 33-6 today in St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Five MU wrestlers, Chris McCormick, Brad Cieleski, Tyron Wodley, Ben Askren and Matt Pell won both of their afternoon matches.

“Our team wrestled very aggressively today, “Head Coach Brian Smith said. “Coming off of a disappointing finish at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational two weeks ago, these wins mean a lot to the team. Both Virginia Tech and Ohio State have really tough wrestling programs that are on the rise. Today, we were able to go out strong and show control both on our feet and on the mat. Overall, I’m really pleased with today’s performance. “

Missouri vs. Virginia Tech Recap: Wrestling in the first of their back-to-back duals, the Tigers outscored the Hokies 33-6, dropping only two matches by a total of four points. The pairing of the two schools was a first, and gives Missouri a 1-0 lead over the newly inducted ACC school.

Winning seven consecutive matches at 141, 149, 157, 165, 174, 184 and 197 pounds, Missouri tallied a 30-point lead that the Hokies were unable to regain. Junior Austin DeVoe (Columbus, Kan.) put Missouri’s first points on the board with a 7-2 decision over Justin Staylor. Junior Chris McCormick (Leawood, Kan.) followed with his first win of the afternoon coming 9-2 over Danny Ooton at 141 pounds.

Three MU wrestlers earned bonus point wins against Virginia Tech. Entering the weekly top 20 rankings for the first time of the season, No. 19 senior Cody Greene (St. Chales, Mo.) landed a major decision over his opponent for the Tigers’ first bonus point win. Sophomore 184 pound wrestler #8 Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) recorded a technical fall against his Hokie opponent and junior #14 Jeff Foust (Blue Springs, Mo., 197) closed things out for the Tigers, pinning his opponent in 4:19.

Missouri vs. Ohio State Recap: In their second dual of the day, the Tigers once again took eight wins out of 10 matches, with only redshirt freshman #19 Tyler McCormick (133) and junior #14 Jeff Foust (197) suffering losses, both to higher ranked opponents. The win moves the Tigers to 6-4 all-time over Ohio State, and gives Smith a 2-0 record over the Buckeyes.

Redshirt freshman Tim Kephart (O’Fallon, Mo.) made his first collegiate start at 125 pounds, recording a 5-2 decision over Ohio State opponent Eric Wanner. Also leading the Missouri lineup for the first time was redshirt freshman Josh Wagner (Milton, Wis.) at 149 pounds. Wagner recorded one of two MU falls in the dual, pinning Ryan Needle in the first period (1:46).

Adding to the Tigers’ team points, sophomore Matt Pell (Luxemburg, Wis.) pinned Alex Picazo in 2:45, bringing Missouri’s lead over the Buckeyes to 30-3. Ranked as high as ninth in the nation at 184 pounds, Pell improves to 18-3 this season and 50-15 in his career.

Senior Tyron Woodley (No. 8 at 165 pounds, Ferguson, Mo.) tacked on two wins to his career total. Now at 89-34, the 2003 All-American and Big 12 Champion is only 11 wins away from joining the Missouri 100- win club.

Sophomore Ben Askren (Hartland, Wis.) remains the only unbeaten starter in Missouri’s 10-man lineup. Winning his first match by forfeit, No. 2 Askren scored a 17-4 major decision over Nathaniel Auguston. Askren is currently 14-0 on the season and holds the team’s longest active winning streak of the 2004-05 season.

Two Tigers saw familiar competition in today’s matchup against Ohio State. First up and wrestling at 157 pounds, graduate student #14 Brad Cieleski (Brookville, Penn.) evened the score with Buckeye Keegan Mueller. Bouncing back from a 2-1 loss at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 4, Cieleski won today’s bout 9-4. Mueller scored first in the match, but with three takedowns, two escapes and exactly one minute of riding time, Cieleski ended the day with his hand in the air.

Missouri’s final win in Columbus came from true freshman heavyweight Chase Wetenkamp (Manitowoc, Wis.) Wetenkamp and OSU wrestler Kirk Nail met at center circle for the second time of the season, and Wetenkamp again walked way with the win, this time by a score of 4-3. The heavyweights last paired at the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Dec. 3, where Wetenkamp won the bout with a 4-1 decision.

“Tomorrow we take on Ohio University, “Smith said. “This will be one of the first times a nationally ranked team has competed in Athens, and we’re looking forward to the challenge ahead of us. We saw how Ohio was able to break down Ohio State earlier in the season, so everyone on the Missouri team knows how strong of a team Ohio really is. Once again, we’re going to have to go into the dual focused and aggressive if we want to come out on top.”

The Missouri wrestling team will travel to Athens, Ohio, and compete against the Ohio University Bobcats tomorrow at 1 p.m. CT in the Convention Center.
