No. 22 Penn Tops Purdue, 24-16

Merillville, Ind. “The University of Pennsylvania wrestling team opened the dual meet portion of its schedule with a 24-16 victory over Purdue this evening as six Quakers recorded victories. The Red and Blue (1-0), ranked 22nd nationally, opened the meet by taking the first four bouts from the Boilermakers (3-3).

Feast, ranked sixth in the country, started things off for Penn with a 7-3 decision over Purdue freshman Jake O’Brien. Feast and O’Brien first met this season at the Las Vegas Invitational where Feast earned a 10-1 major decision.

At 141, senior Doug McGraw won his fifth bout in a row with an exciting 3-1 decision over Rene Hernandez. McGraw recorded a reversal in the second overtime period for the win.

Junior Dustin Wiles earned points for the Red and Blue after his opponent, Barry Jackson, medically forfeited. Wiles opened the match with a quick takedown and recorded six near fall points before the bout was called at 2:01.

Senior Jeff Eveleth came away with an easy 6-0 decision over Sean Schmaltz at 133, while Brock Wittmeyer, needed just two takedowns for the 4-2 victory over John DeCeault at 165.

Senior Marcus Schontube, a native of Lowell, Ind., was edged by Nathan Moore, 6-4, in front of large hometown crowd. The meet was originally scheduled to be Schontube’s high school in Lowell, but severe weather and poor driving conditions forced a change in location to Merrillville High School.

The Quakers are back in action on Jan. 7 as they travel to Central Michigan for 7:30 p.m. (CST) start. The Red and Blue returns home on Jan. 16 for a meets against No. 8 Hofstra (1p.m.), Wagner (3 p.m.) and Drexel (5 p.m.) at The Palestra.
