While there are only five schools in the Big 12 Conference with varsity wrestling teams, those five are continuing to make a major mark on the world of college wrestling.

Oklahoma State is once again undefeated, top-ranked, and the favorite to be on its way to its third straight and 33rd overall NCAA Div. I national championship in this, the 75th year of this tournament. Close behind are Iowa State, which is ranked between third and fifth, and Nebraska, which is ranked between third and sixth, in the various college polls. Oklahoma is also in the top ten in every poll, while Missouri is ranked between 12th and 14th.

Thus far these five Big 12 teams have had a total of 31 meets against teams from other conferences. The Big 12 teams’ overall record: 31-0, including 5-0 over the perennially tough Big Ten. It would not be a stretch to argue that thus far this season, the Big 12 has proved to be the toughest conference in college wrestling.

The Big 12 has just announced its selection for its Wrestler of the Month for December 2004. The winner is Iowa State’s undefeated 141-pounder, Nate Gallick.

Here is the Big 12 press release with this announcement:
