Cyclones Rally to Beat Minnesota 21-12

WR: Iowa State Rallies for 21-12 against the Golden Gophers

January 9, 2005 – Fourth-ranked Iowa State (11-0) rallied from a 12-5 deficit to earn a 21-12 victory against the eighth-ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team (2-3) on Sunday afternoon in Ames, Iowa. Senior Bobbe Lowe improved to 22-0 on the season with a win at 125 pounds. His 22 straight wins are tied for the 11th-longest streak in school history.

Second-ranked Cole Konrad gave Minnesota a 3-0 lead with a 4-3 overtime decision against 10th-ranked Coleman Scott at heavyweight. The two exchanged escapes in the second and third periods, but in the first overtime, Konrad earned a takedown following his escape to take a 4-1 lead. Coleman earned an escape in the first and second overtime, but Konrad held on for the win to improve to 20-2 on the season.

Lowe increased the Golden Gophers’ lead to 6-0 with an 11-5 decision against 15th- ranked Grant Nakamura. Nakaura cut Lowe’s lead to 4-3 in the second period, but Lowe scored a reversal to take control of the match. Lowe added two more takedowns in the third period and added another point for a riding time advantage of 1:36.

In a battle of two four-time Iowa state high school champions, redshirt freshman Mack Reiter earned an 11-6 decision against the Cyclones’ Jesse Sundell at 133 pounds. Reiter took a 6-5 lead into the third period as both wrestlers earned a pair of reversals in the second period. Reiter scored a reversal and a takedown in the third period to improve his record to 21-3.

Iowa State cut the Golden Gopher lead to 9-5 as top-ranked Nate Gallick earned a 22-7 technical fall against redshirt freshman Manuel Rivera at 141 pounds. Gallick dominated with nine takedowns and a third-period near fall to earn the two bonus points.

Redshirt freshman C.P. Schlatter continued his comeback from a knee injury with a 7-3 decision against Jason Knipp at 149 pounds. After suffering a serious knee injury this past summer, Schlatter improved to 6-1 on the season as he pushed Minnesota’s lead to 12-5. The Cyclones responded with five straight wins to clinch the match.

Iowa State cut the lead to 12-9 behind an 11-2 major decision from seventh-ranked Trent Paulson against redshirt freshman Nik Lentz at 157 pounds. Paulson scored two first- period takedowns and never looked back. He scored a takedown with three seconds remaining in the match to earn the extra bonus point for the major decision.

The Cyclones knotted the match at 12 as sixth-ranked Travis Paulson earned a late 3-1 decision against eighth-ranked Matt Nagel at 165 pounds. The pair split their two matches a year ago, but Paulson earned the win today with a takedown with 36 seconds to go in the match. Nagel dropped to 18-4 with his four losses coming against top-10 opponents by a total of six points.

Iowa State took its first lead of the day at 174 pounds as David Bertolino defeated Josh McLay, 7-2. After taking a 2-0 lead into the third period, Bertolino added two takedowns and a bonus point for riding time to earn the win.

The Cyclones took control of the match as third-ranked Kurt Backes defeated No. 7 Roger Kish, 7-2, at 184 pounds. Following a scoreless first period, Backes earned an escape and a takedown in the second period. He added two more takedowns in the third period to increase Iowa State’s lead to 18-12.

Iowa State closed out the match on Trevor Smith’s 7-5 overtime decision against redshirt freshman Matt Koz at 197 pounds. Koz took a 5-0 lead in the second period, but Smith rallied with a reversal in the second and an escape and a takedown in the third period to knot the match at five. Smith scored the deciding takedown 12 seconds into the first overtime session.

Minnesota has two weeks off as it prepares for the National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio, on Jan. 22-23.
