Missouri Wrestling Team Suffers First Loss of Season

…Tigers Fall to No. 6 Lehigh…

Jan. 11, 2005

New York City, NY – In a dual that came down to the final match of the evening, No. 12 Missouri was handed their first loss of the season by No. 6 Lehigh (22-17) in the New York Athletic Club of New York City. The Tigers are now 8-1 on the season.

Overcoming a 15 point Lehigh advantage, Missouri came from behind and led the dual following the 184 pound match. Ranked 18th in the nation at 149 pounds, junior Cody Greene (149) was the first Tiger wrestler to score Missouri points with a 10-8 decision over Mountainhawk Dave Nakasone. Greene’s victory set the Tigers on a five-match win streak that included victories by No. 14 Brad Cieleski (157), No. 8 Tyron Woodley (165), No. 2 Ben Askren (174) and No. 9 Matt Pell (184).

In a battle between two top-15 opponents, Cieleski entered his match against No. 10 Derek Zinck as the underdog and went on to score his 19th victory of the season in the form of a 6-5 decision. The Tigers’ first bonus point win of the night came from MU senior co-captain Woodley. Wrestling at 165 pounds, Woodley dominated his opponent Ben Bishop, 11-1, helping close the gap between the two highly ranked teams.

Askren jogged to center circle next for the Tigers and dropped Lehigh opponent #15 Travis Frick in an 11-4 decision. The only unbeaten starter on the MU team, Askren is now 19-0 on the season.

A sophomore 2004 NCAA Qualifier, Pell won his match against Matt Cassidy with a 16-4 major decision, scoring six of his final 16 points in the third period.

Working against a loud Lehigh crowd, junior Jeff Foust and true freshman Chase Wetenkamp attempted to help secure a Missouri lead, but suffered disappointing 4-0 and 12-2 losses, respectively.

Fans unable to attend tonight’s event will have the opportunity to watch the dual in a tape-delayed broadcast aired on CSTV, tomorrow night at 9 p.m. (CT). CSTV is available on DirecTV, channel 610.

The Tigers will head South to Hampton, Va., for the Virginia Duals, Friday, Jan. 14 and Saturday, Jan. 15.
