Sioux Falls, S.D. – Augustana won four of the last five matches of the night, including the final three to defeat Augsburg 22-13 in front of 1,232 fans Tuesday night in the Elmen Center.

The Vikings (4-0), ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, trailed 13-12 heading into the 184-pound match. However, Tom Meester, the defending national champion and top-ranked wrestler in Division II, gave Augustana the lead for good when he recorded a 18-6 major decision over Brad Tupa to make the team score 16-13 in favor of the Vikings.

Tim Boldt and Cris Bietz followed with decision victories for Augustana to close out the dual and give the Vikings their first-ever dual win over Augsburg, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, in six meetings. Boldt trailed 5-3 to Justin Sorensen heading into the third period. He scored an escape with 1:41 left in the period to make it 5-4, and then he scored a takedown near the edge of the mat to grab the lead at 6-5 with 1:23 remaining. Boldt, who did not wrestle Saturday against St. Cloud State due to illness, then rode out Sorensen and picked up an additional point for riding time.

Bietz never trailed in his match against Mark Simmonds, ranked No. 4 in Division III. Bietz led 2-0 after one period and 6-1 after two periods. He then rode Simmonds for the entire third period to earn the 7-1 win.

Augustana also got wins from Aaron Graumann, Ryan King and Cody Henriksen. Graumann picked up a forfeit win at 125 pounds, while King, ranked No. 1 at 149 pounds, earned a 6-3 decision over Ryan Stroud. Henriksen, ranked No. 6 at 165 pounds, picked up a big 7-5 win over Ryan Valek, ranked No. 3 in Division III.

Henriksen scored a quick takedown and three-point near fall to grab a 5-0 lead. Valek managed to escape to make the score 5-1 after one period. Leading 7-3 after two periods, Henriksen chose to start the final period in the neutral position. Neither wrestler could manage any offense until Valek scored a takedown with 9 seconds remaining.

Augsburg’s Marcus LeVesseur, the two-time defending national champion at 157 pounds, reached a milestone in his 15-3 major decision over Austin Scarset. With the win, LeVesseur, a junior, improved to 100-0 in his college career.

Augsburg’s other wins came from Mark Matzek at 133 pounds, Jamell Tidwell at 141 pounds and Casey Flaherty at 174 pounds. Matzek defeated Chris Trampe 6-2, Tidwell downed Andre Vander Velde 15-8 and Flaherty edged Dusty Wilking 5-2.
