Wrestling: Vestal’s Musser opts to compete for Brown

Vestal senior Chris Musser, who this past season broke the school record for varsity wrestling victories, has announced he will attend Brown University in Providence, R.I., next fall.

Musser chose Brown over several other schools, including Virginia and Stanford. He will receive an academic-based financial package — Ivy League schools cannot give athletic scholarships — that will cover virtually all of his costs.

“I couldn’t pass up Ivy League academics, “said Musser, whose scholastic average is in the mid-90s. “The location was good, it was a perfect distance away from home and the facilities were great.

“I just fell in love with the campus.”

During his senior season, Musser broke Vestal’s all-time victory record of 137 victories that was held by Kelly Patterson, who wrestled from 1990-94.

Musser finished his senior season with a 35-2 record, winning the Section 4 152-pound title — his second Section 4 title — and placing fourth at the state tournament at Division I 152. He finished his Vestal wrestling career with a varsity record of 164-33.

Musser also helped lead Vestal to the Division I team title at the Section 4 Wrestling Championships in February.

“During the later part of my sophomore season, I realized that it was something I wanted to do in the future. “Musser said of the opportunity to wrestle at the NCAA Division I level.

Musser expects to compete at 165 pounds during his freshman season at Brown. The Bears went 6-9 in dual meets and placed 10th at the EIWA Championships last season.

“I talked to (Brown wrestling coach) Dave Amato about every week, “Musser said of the recruiting process. “He was very interested (in me).”
