Kurt Angle: “I Was Never Really Happy” in WWE

September 27th, 2006 by Administrator

“First, let me say to our talent and our staff, congratulations on our move to primetime. Each of you have worked so hard for this and deserve all the great things that will come with the move. To our fans, none of us would be here without you. Your belief in our product has made all of this possible, and from all of us, thank you. This is just the beginning.

I hope the hype of our announcements last night lived up to or exceeded your expectations. In this industry, it is very hard to keep anything quiet. We are thrilled to have Kurt Angle join our team. Just like with all of our wrestlers, Kurt’s family and health will always come first. I’m sure you will be hearing from him in the coming weeks.

I asked Kurt’s agent to provide me with a quote for our announcement release. Most times a publicist, manager or agent will prepare a statement for the talent. But after a long film shoot in Nashville last week that ended at midnight, Kurt sat down and hand wrote his heartfelt comments on a hotel note pad. Instead of just pulling a small part from that to use in the press release, I thought his fans would love to share in his full emotions from that night:

Wrestling With Cancer

September 27th, 2006 by Administrator

By McKENZIE BECKER
TEENS IN THE NEWSROOM

Editor’s note: On Tuesday doctors told Trevor Machado-Ching that his cancer is in remission. Teens in the Newsroom writer McKenzie Becker spent time with him this summer as he battled non-Hodgkins Lymphoma.

OAKDALE — It’s the dog days of summer — 110 degrees outside — and Trevor Machado-Ching sits on the back of a truck, playing with his new puppy, Flash.

Not 10 feet away is an air-conditioned building, but Trevor and Flash can’t go in. Why? Trevor is battling non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a type of cancer, and his blood count is low due to chemotherapy. Inside the building there are people with germs — germs that could threaten Trevor’s life.

But Trevor doesn’t mind staying outside, just like he didn’t seem to mind traveling every two weeks to Stanford University Medical Center to undergo chemotherapy treatments.

When it comes to his medical condition, he’s kept a positive attitude.

“Nothing’s stopping me,” said Trevor, 16.

Last spring, Trevor began to feel a sharp pain in his shoulder. The star wrestler, who won the state championship during his freshman year at Oakdale High and finished fourth as a sophomore, figured it was just a small injury from wrestling.

Cliffkean Sponsors Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Episode

September 22nd, 2006 by Administrator

Ann Arbor, MI- Cliff Keen Athletic is proud to announce its support of ABC TV’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition premiere Sunday, September 24 at 8/7c.

The season kickoff project, which must remain secret until the show airs, features the Rogers Family of North Pole, Alaska. The thirteen member extended family lived in an uninsulated, 2-bedroom and 3/4 bath home that had no foundation and only enough hot water for one warm shower. The house was actually beginning to come down around them.

That’s when the Extreme Makeover Team jumped into action and decided to help this very deserving family. Cliff Keen’s part was to come. “I received a phone call from one of the field producers,” says Tom Keen of Cliff Keen Athletic. “They communicated to me that the young boys in the family were heavily involved in the sport of wrestling and asked if we would be able to help.” Cliff Keen Athletic jumped in with both feet. “It’s actually quite ironic; my wife and I love this show and watch it every Sunday. It’s one of those shows that brings out the good in people and demonstrates that communities can still pull together to help out their neighbor. So of course we said we would contribute in any way we could – what do you need from us?” Not really being wrestling experts, the team at Extreme Makeover: Home Edition left it up to Cliff Keen Athletic to come up with what would really make a difference to help this family.

Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug returns to the U to present an award, celebrate a book – and mark a new day in his honor

September 22nd, 2006 by Administrator

MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (9/12/2006) — Norman Borlaug, the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize winner and University of Minnesota alumnus, will visit the university’s St. Paul campus next week to take part in the annual E.C. Stakman Award ceremony and to mark the release of a new biography, “The Man Who Fed the World,” by friend and colleague Leon Hesser.

Borlaug and Hesser will be on campus Monday, Sept. 18 — the date that Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty recently declared to be Dr. Norman E. Borlaug Day in recognition of Borlaug’s contributions to the university, the state and the world.

Borlaug earned his bachelor’s degree from the U in 1937, his master’s degree in 1939 and his doctorate degree in 1942. A plant pathologist by training, he has spent the better part of six decades fighting hunger in Africa, Asia and Mexico – saving, by some estimates, as many as 1 billion lives. Hesser, who earned his doctorate degree in agricultural economics from Purdue University, met Borlaug in Pakistan in 1966; Hesser then worked to introduce Borlaug’s high-yield seeds and production techniques to the Asian subcontinent.

Wrestling brings Tigers’ Askren brothers together

September 22nd, 2006 by Administrator

Brothers WrestlingBrothers are wired for aggression. Their weapons are noogies and charley horses. They call each other names like “goat breath” and “skunk face.” They brawl and maul and then, one day, it ends.

Missouri wrestlers Ben and Max Askren never stopped fighting each other. Almost every day, they step on the mat and grapple for 30 minutes. It’s intense, but never violent. Impassioned, but never obsessive.

MU wrestler Max Askren, top, and his older brother Ben Askren, bottom, practice at the Hearnes Center Thursday. Ben Askren hopes to wrestle for the U.S. Olympic Team in 2008 after graduation. (IKURU KUWAJIMA/Missourian)

“With their passion for the sport, it permeates through the room,” Missouri wrestling coach Brian Smith said, “and it’s contagious.”

Preparations for the upcoming season have begun, and Ben Askren, 22, and Max Askren, 20, are two of the many reasons Missouri is ranked No. 3 in the nation in the wrestlingreport.com preseason poll released on Aug. 30. The two started the sport as children and soon fell in love with it. Max Askren followed his older brother to MU, where he has seen him establish himself as the best collegiate wrestler in the country. Before Ben Askren graduates next year and attempts to qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team, they will be Missouri teammates for the first and only time.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) Oklahoma State’s wrestling team begins its fall practice as the Cowboys begin their quest for a fifth straight NCAA title.

OSU loses three former NCAA champions and two other NCAA qualifiers from last season’s lineup. But the Cowboys do return 2 time national champion Johny Hendricks at 165 pounds.

All-Americans Coleman Scott and Nathan Morgan both will move up a weight class this season to 133 pounds and 141 pounds, respectively.

OSU coach John Smith brought in 11 freshmen in hopes of keeping the Cowboys’ streak of titles alive. He says this preseason will be as important as any OSU has ever had.

Comedian Carrot Top, Ex-HS Wrestler

September 22nd, 2006 by Administrator

At home with Carrot Top
By LESLIE GRAY STREETER
Cox News Service
Tuesday, September 12, 2006

LAS VEGAS — “So what do you think of this?”

Carrot Top is sketching something, leaning over the counter in the kitchen of his 5,000-square-foot Vegas home, an Asian-inspired paradise with vaulted ceilings that appears to have sprung, fully decorated, from an In Style magazine.

He points to a stick-and-circle drawing of a car, with a stick-figured baby strapped to the front like antlers on J.R. Ewing’s grille.

“It’s a seat for Britney Spears’ baby,” he explains.

Funny.

“So the baby’s strapped on the front, see, and we could get a little car, and get a little baby doll, and put it on there somehow,” he continues, glancing at his assistant, Jeff. “You think we could find something like that?”

Jeff the assistant nods encouragingly. His boss puts his head back down and keeps sketching.

Here are some things you need to know about Carrot Top, famous Florida prop comic, 2006 Nevada magazine Comedian of the Year, collect-call pitchman and manic man of a thousand sight gags:
