{"id":584,"date":"2005-02-15T21:39:00","date_gmt":"2005-02-16T03:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wrestlingpod.com\/wrestling-news\/?p=584"},"modified":"-0001-11-30T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"-0001-11-30T05:00:00","slug":"hoosiers-crush-spartans-dubuque-defeats-simmons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wrestlingpod.com\/wrestling-news\/w584\/hoosiers-crush-spartans-dubuque-defeats-simmons\/","title":{"rendered":"Hoosiers Crush Spartans; Dubuque Defeats Simmons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dubuque Defeats Simmons as IU Crushes Michigan State<\/p>\n<p>From Indiana Sports Information <\/p>\n<p>Bloomington, Ind.- Fifth ranked Joe Dubuque set the tone for the 19th-ranked Indiana <br \/>Hoosiers&#8217; 33-4 over 12th-ranked Michigan State as he defeated third-ranked Nick Simmons of <br \/> Michigan State, 6-4 at 125 pounds. <\/p>\n<p>Dubuque who bested previously undefeated Simmons led an IU attack that won nine of 10 <br \/>matches, Saturday afternoon in University Gym. <\/p>\n<p>With the dual starting at 125 pounds, Dubuque jumped out to an early lead with a takedown at the <br \/>2:09 mark in the first period before Simmons cut the lead to one with an escape at the 1:43 mark. <br \/> After each wrestler tried to take the offensive, Dubuque extended his lead to 4-1 with a takedown <br \/>with 40 seconds left in the period, before Simmons countered with an escape three seconds later. <\/p>\n<p>With Dubuque leading 4-2 heading into the second period, The Bloomfield, N.J., native recorded <br \/>his third takedown 16 seconds into the period to give him a 6-2 lead. Simmons, then responded <br \/>with another escape to make the score 6-3. <\/p>\n<p>With Simmons decision to choose top, the sophomore attempted to turn Dubuque on his back to <br \/> gain near-fall points, but was unable as Dubuque held his ground for the win. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Assistant coach Mike Mena and I at the start of the week had a plan for Simmons, &#8220;Dubuque <br \/>said. &#8220;I wanted to keep the match on my feet. In that third period, he tried to turn me, but I was <br \/>able to hold him off. This was a big match, but I have another one tomorrow and still have the Big <br \/>Ten and NCAA Championships left to go. &#8220;<\/p>\n<p>With the Hoosiers up 3-0, redshirt freshman Brian Dyer extended the IU lead to 6-0 as he broke a <br \/>four-match losing streak defeating Ryan Froese, 3-2 at 133 pounds. With Dyer up by one, he was <br \/>able to withstand Froses attempts at a takedown for the final 64 seconds. <\/p>\n<p>Senior Mike Simpson extended the IU lead to 10-0 as he scored a 14-6 major decision over Tony <br \/>Greathouse at 141 pounds. Simpson dominated the match from start to finish as he recorded <br \/>over three minutes of riding time. <\/p>\n<p>After junior Cameron Sakon lost to 14th-ranked Darren McKnight, 17-9 at 149 pounds, redshirt <br \/>freshman Brandon Becker scored a 13-4 major decision over Justin Mora at 157 pounds. With <br \/>Becker holding onto a 7-3 lead heading into the third period, he scored an important three-point <br \/>near-fall to extended his lead to 10-3 before adding a takedown and riding-time point in the final <br \/>25 seconds. <\/p>\n<p>At 165 pounds, redshirt freshman Max Dean, scored a late takedown over Bryan Harney to score <br \/>a 10-7 decision to give IU a commanding 17-4 lead. <\/p>\n<p>With IU up, 17-4, junior Brady Richardson extended the lead to 21-4 with a 19-7 major decision <br \/>over Greg Gordoski. With Richardson leading 10-5 heading into the final stanza, he recorded <br \/> three takedowns and the riding time point. <\/p>\n<p>Following Richardson&#8217;s win at 174 pounds, junior Andy Rios needed just 13 seconds in his match <br \/> against 18th-ranked Joe Williams at 184 pounds. Rios won via medical injury default to give <br \/>Indiana a 27-4 lead. <\/p>\n<p>With the dual no longer in doubt, sophomore Josh Buuck defeated Jeff Clemens, 11-10 at 197 <br \/>pounds. With Clemens leading 10-9, Buuck recorded an escape with five seconds left to tie the <br \/> match up at 10. Buuck emerged victorious because, he owned the riding time point, giving him <br \/>the 11-10 win. <\/p>\n<p>The final match of the afternoon saw redshirt freshman Dave Herman hold on for a 4-2 win over <br \/>Max Loosen at the heavyweight position. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was a good job by our team today. &#8220;Indiana Head coach Duane Goldman said. &#8220;It was good to <br \/>see us bounce back after a tough loss last weekend to Wisconsin.
