After Joey (Dubuque) was upset, the rest of the team really stepped up. We won a lot of close matches. Most importantly we came out of the dual healthy.”

The dual started out on a down note as third-ranked junior Joe Dubuque saw his season-long 17 match and 21 dual match winning streak came to an end as he fell to Brandon Tucker, 4-3 at 125 pounds to give Purdue an early 3-0 lead.

Tucker jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, as he took down Dubuque for only the second time this season at the 1:12 mark in the first period. Dubuque followed with a reversal to tie the match up at two apiece with 55 seconds left.

Tucker regained the lead at 3-2 with an escape with 38 seconds left. With 1:35 remaining in the second period, Dubuque again tied the dual at three with an escape.

With the score tied at three, Tucker took a one-point lead as he recorded an escape with 1:11 remaining in the match. Despite a flurry of attempts by Dubuque, he wasn’t able to take Tucker down.

Indiana tied the match up at three as redshirt freshman Bryan Dyer defeated Sean Schmaltz, 4-2 at 133 pounds.

After a scoreless first period, Dyer jumped out the 1-0 lead after Schmaltz was called for his second stall warning. Dyer extended his lead to 4-0 with a takedown with 1:12 remaining in the second period before Schmaltz recorded an escape to bring the score to 4-1. After Schmaltz escape to cut the lead to two, Dyer was able to withstand numerous attempts at a takedown by Schmaltz for the final 56 seconds.

The Hoosiers took their first lead of the dual, 6-3, at 141 pounds as 13th-ranked Mike Simpson scored a 7-6 decision over Ben Sprunger.

With Simpson up by one, 7-6 he was able to hold off Sprunger for the remaining 30 seconds to take the match.

Purdue tied the match again at six after Cameron Sakon fell to 10th-ranked Doug Withstandley, 10-5 at 149 pounds.

At 157 pounds, 16th-ranked redshirt freshman Brandon Becker defeated Colton Salazar, 6-3 to give IU a 9-6 lead. With Becker up 4-1 after a scoreless second period, Salazar cut the lead to one at 4-3 after he scored a two-point near-fall on Becker. After a Becker escape to make the score 5-3, he was able to hold off Salazar and gain the riding time point for the three-point win.

Redshirt freshman Max Dean followed with a 7-3 win over John DeCault at 165 pounds to extend the IU lead to 12-6.

Sixteenth ranked Brady Richardson gave IU its third straight win as he defeated Dan Beody, 4-1 at 174 pounds.

With Richardson up, 2-1 he recorded the match-winning takedown with seven seconds left.

After Purdue scored wins at 184 and 197 pounds, the dual headed into the heavyweight match with IU up 18-15.

Wrestling for the first time since Jan. 30 after suffering a shoulder injury, senior Pat DeGain recorded a 4-2 win over Jake O’Brien.

With DeGain up 2-1 he recorded a takedown with 25 seconds left to extend his lead to 4-1. O’Brien cut the lead to two at 4-2 but was unable to take DeGain down the final 14 seconds.

The Hoosiers return to action on Sunday, Feb. 20 as they travel to Iowa City, Iowa to take on the ninth-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes beginning a 1 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

No 18 Indiana 18, Purdue 12
125-Brandon Tucker (PUR) by decision over No. 3 Joe Dubuque (IU), 4-3
133-Brian Dyer (IU) by decision over Sean Schmaltz (PUR), 4-2
141- No. 13 Mike Simpson (IU) by decision over Ben Sprunger (PUR), 7-6
149- No. 10 Doug Withstandley (PUR) by decision over Cameron Sakon (IU), 10-5
157- No. 16 Brandon Becker (IU) by decision over Colton Salazar (PUR), 6-3
165-Max Dean (IU) by decision over John DeCeault (PUR), 7-3
174- No. 16 Brady Richardson (IU) by decision over Dan Bedoy (PUR), 4-1
184- No. 16 Ben Wissel (PUR) by decision over Andy Rios (IU), 5-3
197- No. 15 Nathan Moore (PUR) by decision over Josh Buuck (IU), 6-4
HWT- No. 4 Pat DeGain (IU) by decision over Jake O’Brien (PUR), 4-2

Hoosiers Derail BoilermakersMatch-By-Match ResultsPat DeGain Feature Bloomington, Ind. “The 18th-ranked Indiana Hoosier wrestling team improved their overall record to 16-4 and 4-3 in conference action with a 18-12 win over rival Purdue, Friday night in University Gym in front its largest crowd of the season consisting of 563 fans. “Anytime you have a Purdue/Indiana dual […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-510","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-wrestling
["GET
