Grant<\/p>\n<p>Grant named assistant coach after standout collegiate career.  <\/p>\n<p>Jan. 3, 2005 <\/p>\n<p>CHAPEL HILL, N.C. &#8211; Former University of Michigan All-America A.J. Grant has been named assistant wrestling coach at the University of North Carolina, Tar Heel head coach C.D. Mock announced Monday. Grant is a part-time assistant with the Tar Heels, working with the lightweights on technique and training. He is also working part-time with Irwin Tools, a division of Rubbermaid.<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;We are very pleased to have A.J. Grant working with the program, &#8220;said Mock, who is in his second season as UNC head coach. &#8220;He was an intense competitor at the University of Michigan and has accomplished what many of our guys are working for. He brings a dimension of youth to our coaching staff and will work primarily with our lightweights. He has already had an impact.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> A standout 125-pounder at Michigan and letterman from 1999-2003, Grant earned All-America honors in 2001 and `03 with a pair of fourth-place finishes at the NCAA Championships. As a senior, Grant was the 125-pound runner-up at the Big Ten Championships and posted a 34-9 overall record. He was ranked fourth in the final polls by both InterMat and Amateur Wrestling News. Grant went 116-58 during his collegiate career and is ranked 14th on the Wolverines&#8217; career victories list. He graduated from Michigan with a Bachelor of Science degree in sports management.<\/p>\n<p> The 24-year-old Grant is a native of Clarkston, Mich., and a 1999 graduate of Clarkston High School. He earned prep All-America honors and won Michigan state titles in 1998 and `99. Grant went 196-9 during his high school career and won his final 98 matches.<\/p>\n<p> Grant comes to Chapel Hill from Northville High School in Northville, Mich., where he served as head wrestling coach for one season<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Michigan All-America A.J.
