The Big Red defeated the Boilermakers 29-9 before winning nine bouts against Div. II powerhouse Central Oklahoma in a 38-3 rout.

In the opener against the Sooners, the Big Red was able to muster four wins, highlighted by Joe Mazzurco’s upset against E.K. Waldhaus at 174 pounds. Oklahoma posted victories in five of the first six matches, the lone exception being No. 2-ranked Travis Lee’s 8-1 decision over Joe Comparin at 133 pounds. In two matchups that both featured two ranked wrestlers, senior Tyler Baier (No. 9) secured a 5-0 victory over 13th-ranked Justin Dyer at 184 pounds and sophomore Jerry Rinaldi, ranked 11th in the country, held off No. 12 Joel Flaggert by a score of 3-2 at 197 pounds. Junior Dustin Manotti, the nation’s second-ranked wrestler at 149, scored a pair of early takedowns in his match with fifth-ranked Matt Stornolio, but ended up suffering his first loss of the season as Stornolio came back with two five-point moves en route to a 12-4 major decision.

Against the Boilermakers, six Cornell grapplers earned victories on the mat and Mazzurco won by forfeit. The Big Red’s most promising result occurred in the final bout, as senior heavyweight Matt Bogumil upset 13th-ranked Jake O’Brien, 3-1, by recording a takedown in the first sudden victory frame. Other winners for Cornell included senior Mike Mormile (125), Lee, Manotti, Baier and Rinaldi. Baier posted a 2-1 win in the first tiebreaker over 12th-ranked Ben Wissel.

Cornell will return to action on Friday, Jan. 14, when it travels to face EIWA rival Lehigh at 7 p.m. The Mountain Hawks are currently ranked sixth in the country.

No. 10 Oklahoma 23, No. 11 Cornell 12
125: Sam Hazewinkel (OU) dec.
