A majority of members of the New York State Assembly support the legalization of professional mixed martial arts fighting in the state,\u00a0according to a survey<\/a>\u00a0by Capital New York.<\/p>\n

The media outlet reported 76 members have either signed on as bill co-sponsors or said they would vote in favor. The bill has not yet come to the floor.<\/p>\n

The Senate has passed a bill six times to make the sport legal in New York.<\/p>\n

New leadership in the Assembly\u00a0has given supporters hope<\/a>\u00a0this spring.<\/p>\n

Former Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, is fighting corruption charges.<\/p>\n

His replacement, Speaker Carl Heastie, D-Bronx, was once listed as a co-sponsor of a bill that would legalize the sport.<\/p>\n

Another lead sponsor is Assemblyman Joe Morelle, D-Rochester, who is the Democratic majority leader.<\/p>\n

Supporters say New York \u2013 the last state to ban the sport \u2013 is missing out on jobs and tourism revenue. Opponents say the sport is too violent.<\/p>\n

The combat sport combines wrestling and boxing with martial arts such as kick-boxing and Brazilian jiu jitsu.<\/p>\n

The Onondaga County Legislature earlier this month\u00a0approved a resolution<\/a>\u00a0to support MMA.<\/p>\n
