As an assistant and head wrestling coach at Franklin Central High School more than a decade later, Schmoll helped coach several Indiana state champions.

Despite his strong pedigree on the wrestling mats, Schmoll never pushed any of his three sons into the sport. But Schmoll is enjoying the success of two of those sons wrestling for Schmoll’s alma mater this season.

Eric, a senior, is 16-0 for the Crusaders, while younger brother Kevin also is 16-0. Both won City Tournament championships this year. But Tony doesn’t like focusing solely on his sons’ wrestling.

“It’s been really exciting for me to watch them this year, “said Tony Schmoll, an assistant wrestling coach for the Crusaders and a teacher at Franklin Central. “But I never really emphasized that they have to be big successes in wrestling. I always emphasized education first and sports secondary.

“I’m very proud of what they’ve accomplished so far in wrestling, but they’re both honor roll students. I’m very proud of that, too.”

Like Tony, Eric has wrestled varsity for four years. But this easily has been Eric’s best season.

“Eric really has paid his dues in his four years here, “Scecina coach John Maio said. “It’s really nice to see him have this kind of success.”

Eric is enjoying it, too.

“Doing this well my senior year has been really exciting, “he said. “Since we’re both doing so well, that’s been pretty exciting, too. I really am proud of Kevin.”

Wrestling at 112 pounds, Kevin has been dominant, pinning all 16 of his opponents — far exceeding the freshman’s expectations.

“I really didn’t think it would be like this at all, “Kevin said. “I was hoping to have a winning record, place in the City and maybe do something in the postseason.”

Maio said he sees a friendly competition between Kevin and Eric.

“It’s neat, because they both feed off each other, “Maio said. “I think there’s a little bit of competition between them, but they use it to help each other out.”

“There’s a little pressure to do well because of the sibling rivalry, “Eric said. “Once he won the City, I really wanted to get it, too, but we’ve never had any fights or been too competitive.”

John Schmoll, Tony’s father, attended all his son’s high school matches at Scecina. He’s enjoyed watching his grandsons this season.

“I am so proud of those boys. What they’ve done in wrestling is quite an accomplishment, but they’re both excellent students, too, “he said. “I see so much of (Tony) in Eric. They walk the same. They never get excited. When his match is over, Eric just smiles, just like his father did.”

Tony Schmoll called his sons low key. “Neither of them are really the type to get really gung-ho before a match, “he said.

Eric will head to Purdue next year.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[1

post-295","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-wrestling
["GET
