EAST LANSING, MICH. – Dan Gable said “it’s still yet to be determined” if he’ll return to the Iowa wrestling coaching staff next year.<\/p>\n

But if there still is work to be done after this season, expect the 58-year-old coaching legend to back.<\/p>\n

“I really kind of planned going a couple of years,” he said Saturday before the start of the Big Ten Championships at Michigan State University. “I think I want to work full time another year, in one capacity or another. After that, a couple of years of phasing down.”<\/p>\n

Gable, of course, still has a deep love for the sport of wrestling. But he also relishes his time with family, especially his young grandchildren.<\/p>\n

If the family support wasn’t there, he said, he would step aside.<\/p>\n

“I think we’re in a pretty good position right now,” he said. “But if there ever is a decision, that if I move on and they can bring in someone else, and it doesn’t matter, then I’ll move on.<\/p>\n

“If it still matters, which I think it does right now, then I shouldn’t” step down.<\/p>\n

Gable said he hasn’t had too much trouble connecting with these athletes after nine years working in administration.<\/p>\n

“I want to be able to contribute,” he said. “I told Tom I don’t know if I can get it all done in one year.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
