The tournament, which included 186 wrestlers overall, was CSU’s first home competition of the year.

Armstrong (6-2) earned a berth in the 133-pound title bout with a thrilling 9-7 overtime win over Michigan State’s Micah Carter. Carter led the bout, 7-6, until Armstrong scored an escape with 2.3 second remaining to tie the score 7-7. Armstrong took control early in the sudden victory period, taking Carter down just 19.4 seconds into the extra time. Armstrong dropped an 8-3 decision to an unattached Mike Grey in the title bout at 133 to finish is four-match day.

He started the day with a 14-2 major decision over Eastern Michigan’s Vince Licari and then a 3-1 win over Virginia’s Anthony Burke to advance to the semi-final tilt with Carter.

“David definitely wrestled well today, “head coach Jack Effner said. “He wrestled hard and beat some very quality opponents.”

Michaels (9-4) entered the tournament with just four college wins but quickly added to that total, first with a pin over Eastern Michigan’s Rece Cox and then a 5-1 decision over Niagara C.C.’s Tyrell Riley. Sophomore Dan Castillo won his first college match, in the consolation bracket of the 149-pound class, pinning Dave Gorman of Jamestown Community College.

“Today was about getting more experience, and we did that today, “Effner said. “We’ve had a very stressful week, with this tournament and final exams. I think today will help us get better for the second half of the season.”

The Vikings are in action once more during the 2006 calendar year, traveling to the Midlands Invitational on Dec. 29-30 in Evanston, Ill.

2006 CSU Open Placers

125
1st place –
