{"id":2077,"date":"2006-03-17T07:11:09","date_gmt":"2006-03-17T12:11:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wrestlingpod.com\/wrestling-news\/w2077\/"},"modified":"2006-03-17T07:11:09","modified_gmt":"2006-03-17T12:11:09","slug":"intermats-medal-round-coverage-of-ncaa-d2-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wrestlingpod.com\/wrestling-news\/w2077\/intermats-medal-round-coverage-of-ncaa-d2-championships\/","title":{"rendered":"Intermat&#8217;s Medal-Round Coverage of NCAA D2 Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Medal Round Wrapup<br \/>\n<\/strong> By Clyde Hughes<br \/>\n<em>InterMat    Correspondent<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>FINDLAY, Ohio &#8220;<\/strong>Nebraska-Omaha&#8217;s Patrick    Allibone, the defending national champion at 157 pounds, bounced back from a    championship semifinal loss this morning to capture third place in his weight    class at the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Allibone, who    has finished second in his class before winning the title last year, lost to    David Nordhues, of Fort Hays State this morning. Afterwards, he recovered to    beat Dustin Teeman, of Truman State, 5-3, to earn the right to fight for third    place, and then beat Austin Scarset, of Augustana College.<br \/>\nNebraska-Omaha    continued to lead the team standings going into tonight&#8217;s championship rounds    with 103 points, followed by Nebraska-Kearney with 90.5, Shippensburg with    66.5, and Central Oklahoma with 65.5.<\/p>\n<p>The results of the afternoon    medals rounds are as follows:<\/p>\n<p><strong>125 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place:    Sophomore Nick Smith, of Minnesota State-Mankato, made a name for himself with    an impressive 15-7 victory over No. 3-ranked senior Rob McCabe, of Adams    State, who was the highest-ranked All-American returning to weight class this    year.<br \/>\nFifth Place: Trevor Charbonneau, of Nebraska-Kearney, ranked No.. 1    in the class going into the championships, pinned Shane Caruthers, of Central    Oklahoma at the 2:55 mark. Caruthers was ranked No. 7 before arriving in    Findlay.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: Findlay freshman Chris Fechko was awarded seventh    place by medical forfeit over Mike Compton, of Ashland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>133    pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: Central Oklahoma&#8217;s Earl Jones, a national junior    college champion, gutted out a 7-1 win over Shane Perkey, of Indianapolis, who    finished fourth place last year as well. Jones came into the championships    ranked fifth in the country while Perkey was fourth.<br \/>\nFifth Place: No.    6-ranked Ralph Acosta, of Upper Iowa, beat Brandon Reasy, of    Pittsburgh-Johnstown 3-2.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: Jeff Pfaffinger, of Minnesota    State-Mankato, edged No.<br \/>\n7-ranked Dan Hilario, of Nebraska-Omaha 3-1.<\/p>\n<p><strong>141 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: No. 3-ranked Brian Pitts, of Adams    State, edged No.<br \/>\n8-ranked Zach Stevens, of Minnesota State-Mankato, 6-4.<br \/>\nFifth Place: No. 6-ranked Jeff Rutledge, of Nebraska-Kearney, took a big    early lead and cruised to a win over Patrick Sharp, of New Mexico Highlands,    rebounding from a lost Friday to defending national champion Thad Benton, of    Pittsburgh-Johnstown.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: J.J. Zanetta, of Mercyhurst, was    awarded a medical forfeit over Willie Hilton, of University of North    Carolina-Pembroke.<\/p>\n<p><strong>149 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: No. 4-ranked    Michael Delk, of Fort Hays State, beat No.<br \/>\n8-ranked Charlie Pingleton, of    Indianapolis 9-7. Delk dropped into the consolation bracket after losing to    championship finalist Shane Unger, of Nebraska-Omaha, on Friday.<br \/>\nFifth    Place: Ryan King, of Augustana, the No. 1-ranked wrestler coming into the    championships, recovered from a championship semifinal loss with a 3-1 victory    over Shea Timothy, of Central Oklahoma.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: No. 2-ranked Ronald    Paterniti, of Gannon, bounced back from a first-round upset to capture    All-American honors with a<br \/>\n9-7 win over Camille DuPont, of Western State,    Paterniti came into the championships ranked No. 2 in the class and finished    third here last year.<\/p>\n<p><strong>157 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: Defending    national champion Patrick Allibone, of Nebraska-Omaha, settled for third with    an exciting 10-8 sudden victory win over No. 6-ranked Austin Scarset, of    Augustana. Scarset was trying to capture third place after losing his    first-round match to Zachary Lee, of Western State.<br \/>\nFifth Place: Dustin    Teeman, of Truman State, scored a 4-2 decision over Shane Cleve, of Adams    State. Teeman finished in fifth place in last year&#8217;s championship..<br \/>\nSeventh    Place: Stephen Humphrey, of Carson Newman, scored a 6-1 win over No. 4-ranked    Zach Lee, of Western State.<\/p>\n<p><strong>165 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place:    Nebraska-Omaha freshman Ross Taplin overcame a fall in the championship    semifinals to reel off two wins, the second against No. 7-ranked Cody    Henriksen, of Augustana, 5-4, for third place, who finished sixth at the    championships a year ago.<br \/>\nFifth Place: Albert Miles, of    Pittsburgh-Johnstown, pinned No.<br \/>\n5-ranked Cort Peterson, of Central    Oklahoma, at 0:41, for the win.<br \/>\nMiles lost to Taplin in the first round on    Friday morning. Peterson was a seventh-place finisher last year.<br \/>\nSeventh    Place: No. 2-ranked Andy Pickar, of Minnesota State-Mankato, pinned Larry    Wilbanks, of Western State, at the 2:14 mark for the victory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>174    pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: Upper Iowa&#8217;s Clinton McNaught beat No.. 2-ranked    Travis Krinke, of Minnesota State-Mankato 13-7. Krinke was the national    runner-up in this division last year, but loss earlier Saturday in the    championship semifinals.<br \/>\nFifth Place: No. 5-ranked Aaron Meister, of Fort    Hayes State, won a hard-fought contest against No. 6-ranked Tommy Clark, of    West Liberty State.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: Newberry&#8217;s Quinn Tolbert beat Jesse    Sheets, of Central Missouri State 3-2. Sheets took the consolation route,    losing to former 165 pound champion J.D. Naig in the first round Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>184 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: No. 6-ranked Mark Murphy, of    Shippensburg, who finished fifth last year, improved two spots with a pin of    No. 7-ranked Clinton Salisbury, of Findlay, at 1:17.<br \/>\nFifth Place: No.    1-ranked Greg Nurrenbern, of Truman State, beat No.<br \/>\n2-ranked John Koons,    of Minnesota State-Mankato 6-2 after both lost in the championship semifinals.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: No. 4-ranked Nate Buys, of Augustana, pinned No.<br \/>\n8-ranked Nathan Jones, of Carson Newman, at 4:57, for the victory.<\/p>\n<p><strong>197 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nThird Place: A national champion in 2004, Jeff    Sylvester, of Nebraska-Kearney, scored an 11-3 major decision against No.    1-ranked Tim Boldt, of Augustana. Sylvester, who was ranked No. 3, and Boldt,    both fell in the morning championship semifinals, but followed it up with wins    to move to the third place match.<br \/>\nFifth Place: No. 5-ranked John Goral, of    Wisconsin-Parkside, registered his 100th victory of his wrestling career,    scoring a fall against Joel Wipperfurth, of Southwest State, at the 1:23 mark.<br \/>\nSeventh Place: No. 6-ranked Ryan Kirst, of Ashland, scored a 16-5 major    decision over Casey Woodall, of Adams State, avenging a 5-4 loss to Woodall in    the first round of the championships on Friday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>285 pounds<\/strong><br \/>\nird Place: No. 2-ranked Jacob Liniger, of Shippensburg, scored a<br \/>\n12-2    major decision over Heath Soderstrom, of Adams State.
