Sunnyside High School wrestling coach Bobby DeBerry is not surprised that ex-Blue Devil Nate Gallick won a gold medal at the World University Games in Ismir, Turkey.
\n“The biggest thing that Nate has going for him is his drive, “DeBerry said. “Also, he stills sees the fun in wrestling. Hopefully the foundation we provided him (at Sunnyside) was a good springboard.”<\/p>\n
Gallick, a redshirt senior at Iowa State University, won the gold at 132 pounds. He beat 2004 Olympian Odbasi Tevfik of Turkey in the final match Sunday.<\/p>\n
Gallick came back to win the last two periods 1-0 and 3-0 to capture the gold after losing the first period 6-2.<\/p>\n
He scored a takedown with nine seconds left in the final period to earn the victory.<\/p>\n
Tevfik got a three-point throw early in the first period, and as Gallick tried a three-point throw of his own later in the period, he was put on his back again.<\/p>\n
The officials gave Tevfik three more points for that move, immediately ending the period. The international rule states that a period is over when two three-point throws are executed by one wrestler.<\/p>\n
“He caught me off-guard a little bit (in the first period), “Gallick told themat.com. “I was down points and had to come back. I was down 3-0, and the only way I was going to win was to get a three-point move.”<\/p>\n
Gallick scored a takedown for the only point in the second period to tie the match at one period apiece.<\/p>\n
In the third period Gallick finished a takedown with nine seconds left in the match for the winning point.<\/p>\n
“The second period I didn’t want to rush too much, “Gallick told thematch.com. “It’s a best two-out-of-three. If I lose that period, it’s over. I didn’t get the opening I wanted that period.<\/p>\n
“The third period, he held good position. He did a good job of keeping his distance. Towards the end of the period, I knew I didn’t want to leave it up to the clinch.”<\/p>\n
Gallick lost in the finals of the 2005 NCAA Championships 3-2 to Teyon Ware of Oklahoma at 141 pounds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
