Family knows going to the mat

December 19th, 2005 by Thomas

By: Andrew Shanks - The Daily Iowan

The date was Nov. 13.

Two Iowa wrestlers had just finished demolishing a field of competitors and were slated to meet head-on for the 125-pound title at the Spartan Open in Dubuque. So which one won?

Neither and both.

“We decided that it would be best if we were co-champions,” said freshman Thomas Magnani, who split the title with older brother Lucas Magnani. “We didn’t need to wrestle against each other to prove anything. We were both satisfied with the result.”

They weren’t born with this compassion for one another. Rather, it was instilled in them in their youth. Parents Thomas (Sr.) and Helen Magnani - the former a high-school teacher, the latter a guidance counselor - taught their children that they were brothers first and athletes second.

“I thought that the decision to have them share the championship was the same decision that I would have made,” Thomas Magnani Sr. said. “I mean, sure, there’s a sibling rivalry and a lot of competitiveness. They would want to win against each other if they were playing chess. But the individual title didn’t mean much to either of them, especially because Thomas is redshirting, and they were brothers before anything else.”

Schlatter named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week

December 19th, 2005 by Thomas

12/14/2005 - University of Minnesota Sports Information

Sophomore C.P. Schlatter has been named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after helping lead Minnesota to victories over No. 7 Iowa State and No. 19 Nebraska. Schlatter won both of his matches to improve to 16-2 overall and 7-0 in the dual meets.

Last Friday vs. the Cyclones, Schlatter upset top-ranked Trent Paulson, 5-4, at 157 pounds. It was the first time a Minnesota wrestler had defeated a top-ranked wrestler in a dual since Jacob Volkmann upset Tyrone Lewis of Oklahoma State on Feb. 22, 2004. Schlatter added a 12-5 decision against Nebraska’s Chris Oliver on Sunday.

The Golden Gophers are now 7-0 on the season and climbed to No. 2 in the latest W.I.N. Magazine rankings. Minnesota is off until it travels to Greensboro, N.C., for the Southern Scuffle on Dec. 29-30. The Golden Gophers will host Arizona State at the Sports Pavilion on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Earl Jones: Surprising fans and opponents alike

December 19th, 2005 by Thomas

Mark Palmer

Earl Jones has an impressive set of accomplishments on the mat: A three-time Kansas high school state champion. A two-time junior college national champion. Ranked third in the 133-pound weight class in an early December 2005 NCAA Division II poll as a wrestler for the University of Central Oklahoma.

All these accomplishments are all the more impressive when you realize that Earl is missing the lower portion of his right leg.

Earl was just seven years old when he lost part of his leg after being bitten by a horse. He wears a prosthetic device for walking and other off-the-mat activities, but not during matches. Earl competes on his knees; however, because he is 5′10″ and tall in the body, he does not give up anything in terms of height when facing his opponents.

Earl was already a wrestler at a club in his hometown of Coffeyville, Kansas at the time of the injury. When asked if there was ever any consideration of giving up the sport, Earl says, “I sat out one season. My folks didn’t think I would continue wrestling.”

Referee Yagla recovers from frightening illness

December 19th, 2005 by Thomas

By DAN McCOOL
REGISTER STAFF WRITER

Wrestling official Chuck Yagla said he would like to have an NCAA Division I wrestling tournament as good as last season’s.

The 51-year old Yagla, though, would prefer to not experience the same drama leading up to this season’s event on March 16 in Oklahoma City.

The former two-time NCAA champion at Iowa - and, in 1976, the Hawkeyes’ first outstanding wrestler of the NCAA tournament - was diagnosed with medication-induced hepatitis in the fall of 2004.

Yagla said the culprit was likely a non-steroid, anti-inflammatory drug he took for 15 years to alleviate pain and swelling of a herniated disc in his back.

By the time he returned to officiating last January - Yagla’s weight dropped 20 pounds to close to his 150-pound collegiate wrestling weight. His skin had the jaundiced yellow tint his wife, Sarah, first noticed in his eyes.

“The hardest part for me was I got so weak, I got to where I couldn’t even do one push-up,” said Yagla, whose strength helped him earn a berth on the freestyle team for the 1980 Olympics that the United States boycotted. “It really got depressing on (the strength) side of it. One thing I always did over the years in the morning was to do push-ups. Not to be able to do one, this was crazy.”

Update: Support Gathers for IWIM/Gable Museum in Waterloo

December 14th, 2005 by Thomas

By KEVIN EVANS, Executive Sports Editor

CEDAR FALLS - If enthusiasm and want could carry a project, the Dan Gable International Wrestling Institute and Museum would be up and running on Jefferson Street.

It’s not.

The target date of Nov. 15 for making a decision on the move from Newton to Waterloo has come and gone.

That doesn’t mean the project is dead. In fact, it is alive and well and being approached on a more realistic basis.

It was probably a fantasy that $750,000 could be raised in six weeks’ time without more concrete plans on paper for people to see.

Museum founder Mike Chapman compares that original goal to the way Gable used to set goals before each season when he was coaching at Iowa.

“We didn’t make that deadline, but that was just a deadline, sort of like Gable saying he wanted 10 NCAA champions,” said Chapman. “That was just a goal. I thought we might be able to at least know it was a done deal. It is not disappointing, it just made us realize there has to be more spade work done.”

That’s just what the East Waterloo graduate has been doing.
