Badgers and Spartans Wrestle to 16-16 Tie

MADISON, Wis. – The 12th-ranked Wisconsin wrestling team earned its second tie of the season splitting the match to No. 18 Michigan State, 16-16, Sunday afternoon at the UW Field House. Wisconsin wrestlers Tom Clum, Tyler Laudon, Tyler Turner, Jake Donar and Brady Reinke all earned victories to bring UW’s record to 7-3-2 (0-3-1 Big Ten).

“I give credit to Michigan State because they came out to wrestle,” said head coach Barry Davis. “Will I take a tie, yes, but we got to step up. Not all of our guys are stepping up at the one time and right now we need to do that.”

At 133 pounds, Tom Clum defeated Michigan State’s Ryan Froese 19-8, giving Clum his third major decision victory of the season. In the match, Clum recorded seven takedowns, three nearfall points, an escape and 3:04 minutes of riding time. Next up was senior Tyler Laudon. Laudon needed overtime to defeat third-ranked Andy Simmons by a 5-4 victory. In the first period of overtime, Laudon quickly earned an escape point giving him the win.

“Watered-Down” Lehigh Ease Past Harvard, Brown

January 30th, 2005 by WrestlingPod

Watered-down Hawks ease past Harvard, Brown
By BRIAN FORTNER
The Express-Times

BETHLEHEM — The college wrestling season has reached the point where coaches look for any opportunity to provide much-needed down time for their starters.

That opportunity came Saturday afternoon for coach Greg Strobel’s Lehigh University Mountain Hawks.

Lehigh, ranked fifth nationally by InterMat Wrestling and competing with a make-shift lineup, cruised to a pair of victories — 27-10 over Brown and 37-12 over Harvard — in an Eastern Interscholastic Wrestling Association doubleheader before a crowd of 1,783 at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall.

“We were able to make some lineup changes today and the guys that filled in did a nice job,” Strobel said. “The key to being a solid dual-meet team is having quality backups that can come in and get the job done when called on.”

The Mountain Hawks took on Brown without two of its returning All-Americans — Nazareth Area High School’s Travis Frick (174) and two-time NCAA runner-up Jon Trenge of Parkland (197) — in the starting 10.

In the nightcap, it was Cory Cooperman’s and Derek Zinck’s turns to take a break — at 141 and 157. And starting 285-pounder Paul Weibel sat out with an ankle injury.

Nittany Lions sweep weekend to move to 2-2 in the Big Ten

State College, Pa., Jan. 30, 2005 – The No. 19 Penn State wrestling team made it a clean sweep for the weekend in Rec Hall as the Nittany Lions downed Purdue 32-7 on Sunday afternoon to improve to 8-7 on the year and 2-2 in the Big Ten. Penn State won eight of 10 bouts on the day, including two by fall, to drop Purdue, which beat Ohio State on Friday, to 7-8 (1-2 in the Big Ten). The Nittany Lions return to Rec Hall next Friday, Feb. 4 as they take on No. 9 Iowa (6-4; 1-2 Big Ten) at 7:00 p.m. That match will be televised by CSTV on a tape delay basis with the first broadcast airing on Feb. 5 at 1:30 p.m.

WR: No. 7 Michigan Tops No. 5 Minnesota 24-19

January 30, 2005 – The seventh-ranked Michigan wrestling team (11-3, 3-0) defeated No. 5 Minnesota, 24 -19, at the Sports Pavilion on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Gophers (6-6, 0-2) were without two starters, including seventh-ranked Roger Kish at 184 pounds, and had three wrestlers competing for the first time in their respective careers at different weights.

“Last week, Roger (Kish) defeated the Michigan 184-pounder and if he’s in the lineup today, we win the dual meet,” head coach J Robinson said. “Last week we had a full lineup and it was a different story. That said, we needed some guys to step up today, but we were not able to get the job done.”

The Golden Gophers jumped out to a 10-0 lead thanks to wins from fifth-ranked Bobbe Lowe and third-ranked Mack Reiter. Lowe scored early and often at 125 pounds against Jim Shutich. Lowe had seven takedowns and a first-period near fall to cruise to a 19-7 major decision.

Wildcat Rally Stuns Hawkeyes

Wildcats’ rally stuns Hawkeyes

FROM REGISTER STAFF REPORTS

Evanston, Ill. – The Iowa wrestling team’s 35-match winning streak over Northwestern ended with a 22-19 Big Ten Conference dual meet loss Saturday night.

The Hawkeyes, falling to 6-4 overall and 1-2 in the Big Ten, built a 19-3 lead after winning four of the first five weights.

Needing only one more victory to most likely wrap up the dual victory, Iowa couldn’t finish.

Northwestern (9-1, 2-1 Big Ten) responded by winning the final five matches, including Mike Tamillow’s 5-3 upset of Paul Bradley at 184 pounds and a pair of narrow decisions from Dustin Fox at heavyweight and John Velez at 125 pounds.

Fox edged freshman heavyweight Matt Fields, 7-6, while Velez built an early lead over Charlie Falck and held on for a 10-8 victory in the final match.

The Hawkeyes got pins from junior Joe Johnston (157) and redshirt freshman Mark Perry (165), a major decision from junior Ty Eustice (149) and a decision from junior Mario Galanakis (133) to build the early lead.

Northwestern’s last victory over Iowa was by an 18-6 score in 1968.

Iowa also lost at second-ranked Illinois, 25-7, on Friday.

Alabama’s “First Family of Wrestling”

January 30th, 2005 by WrestlingPod

`First family of wrestling’
JAKE KNIGHT
For The Birmingham News

As a young man, Bob Cuthbertson pictured his future family.

“I grew up loving football, wrestling and baseball,” he said. “Football was my first love.

“I always envisioned, when I’d have a family, my boys would all play football.”

The vision was well on its way when Bob had six boys with his wife, Teresa. Plans changed when the oldest, 25-year-old Rob, became an all-state cross country runner in high school while wrestling some.

Scott, 23, followed Rob’s wrestling lead and earned two state titles. Jeff, 22, went one better, winning three state titles.

At that point, the Cuthbertson wrestling dynasty was well established, and the Cuthbertson clan became better known as Alabama’s “first family of wrestling.”

“We (the younger brothers) were kind of the guinea pigs,” said Michael, a senior at Scottsboro High School. “My older brothers would come home and we’d roughhouse a lot.”

The oldest three brothers’ initial interest in the sport sparked Michael to start wrestling as a third-grader. The youngest, twins Kyle and Chase, started wrestling in kindergarten.

History of Real Pro Wrestling — Part 2

January 30th, 2005 by WrestlingPod

From the official Real Pro Wrestling website www.rpw.tv

RPW History (Part 2) – The Plan

Last week I told how RPW came to be. It would be cool if it were some grand story complete with soundtrack, elven princesses, and wizards with swords. But actually, it was a rather normal day and a typical conversation. Of course, if RPW is such a big hit that they make that fateful day into part of a movie, Matt and I will claim it was dramatic, emotional, and that we had to battle a thousand orcs. After all, is that not how a movie tells us it has to be?

“The world has changed
I can feel it in the water and the air
Things that should not have been forgotten were lost
History became legend, legend became myth…”

Oh well, in a couple minutes the plan for RPW was laid out and Matt told me he would back me. I wonder now if he would do so again as we trudge into Mordor under the weight of the ring. Like Frodo and Sam, two hobbits within a giant world filled with fell men.
