Bobby Douglas to receive Gallagher Award from Oklahoma State on Feb. 20

STILLWATER, Okla. (OSU Athletics at http://www.okstate.com) ” Iowa State head coach Bobby Douglas is this year’s recipient of the Edward Clark Gallagher Award to be presented during Oklahoma State’s homecoming dual with Oklahoma on Feb. 20.

The Gallagher Award is presented annually to the OSU wrestling alumnus who exemplifies the spirit and leadership eminent in the tradition of champions.

Ed Gallagher coached Oklahoma A&M between 1916 and 1940. He won 11 national championships in that time since a national championship began being presented in 1928. Gallagher won all but nine duals in his tenure compiling a career record of 138-5-4. Oklahoma State now wrestles in the building bearing his name.

This year’s award winner, Douglas, only competed for Oklahoma State for one season in 1965 after transferring from West Liberty State. Douglas won a Big Eight title before withdrawing from the 1965 NCAA Championships because of an injury.

Douglas went on to have a prominent international career as both a wrestler and as a coach. He finished fourth in the 1964 Olympics, second in the world in 1966 and third in 1970. He compiled a career record of 303-17 as an amateur wrestler

Douglas began his coaching career at UC-Santa Barbara, before moving on to Arizona State where he won a national championship in 1988. Douglas has been at Iowa State for the past 12 years where he has nine top 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships, including three runner-up finishes.

Douglas coached one of the most prolific wrestlers of all time at Iowa State in Cael Sanderson who went undefeated for his career and recently won the gold medal in the 2004 Olympics.
